Author's Note: Last chapter! maraudersaffair, I hope this matches the prompt and that you like it :D I really, really loved the prompt, and this was fun to write--though I'll definitely admit it was not easy for me. Many, many thanks to kaiwynn for beta'ing this fic. I could not have done it without her much appreciated help, and all remaining errors are my own.

You were stuck in the badlands, acting like a bad, bad man.
I've been photographed and painted up, and I've been in love only once.
And I've feared the best and loved the worst, and insisted that I go first.
And watched your eyes as they poured, and I never really loved you more.
And I never thought I'd see you as I did today.

Chapter Four

Jacob and Edward stood on a deserted, empty street corner a few blocks away from the construction site. Buildings, mostly apartments, surrounded the street on both sides. The sun was just beginning to rise, and Edward and Jacob used its feeble light to search for the killer.

"He's in one of these buildings," Jacob said. "I was right behind him when he turned the corner, but then I lost him. I know he didn't make it off this street. He's here."

"But you don't know where?"

"No."

"So what do we do?"

"I suppose we wait for him to come out. What else can we do?"

"I don't know. But Jake, the sun's coming up and it looks like it's going to be a nice day. We can't be caught outside. I suppose on the bright side, the killer can't come outside either," Edward said.

"We need to find somewhere to hide… somewhere we can see, but not be seen." Jacob stared thoughtfully at the ground, considering. "There's always an alley between the buildings, but those are a little scary."

Edward considered. "Scary, yes. But I think that might be the best we can do. And besides, what's going to happen to two vampires?"

"True… We may have to stay there the entire day, though," Jacob cautioned.

"It's okay. Let's move." He crossed the street to a darkened alley between two apartment buildings; Jacob followed a few seconds later. The two friends sat down in the shadows, Jacob on one side of the skinny alley and Edward on the other. They leaned their backs against the brick wall and tried to relax while still watching diligently. From their positions, they could see the whole street.

"Do you want to talk?" Jacob asked, eager as ever to bring up the topic of their changing relationship. Edward sat in silence for a few moments, looking at his friend.

"I don't think I'm ready," he whispered.

"Do you think you're ever going to be ready?" Jake said impatiently. "I know in theory we've got eternity but… sometimes that's too long to wait." Especially if you're leaving as soon as we've eliminated this killer.

Edward shook his head. "I… Jake, I can't talk about this now."

"Fine."

They sat for hours in the shadows, saying nothing, just watching. The sun rose and stayed visible for almost half the day, then disappeared behind heavy clouds a little after one o'clock in the afternoon.

"Probably safe to be outside now," Jacob commented once the sun was fully covered.

"Probably," Edward replied, "but we can see from here. As long as you're still sure he came down this street…"

"I'm sure."

"Okay." Edward rested his head against the brick wall. "We'll stay then."

"I never said we should move," Jake grumbled.

A few hours later, and it was nearly twilight.

"Look," Edward whispered, pointing to a young man walking out of the apartment building across the street. "That him?"

Jacob moved to the other side of the alley so he could see from Edward's position. Then he nodded and started to move out into the street; Edward followed. With lightning speed, Jacob ran towards the vampire, who started racing away as soon as he realized Jacob and Edward had not lost his trail. Unfortunately for the two friends, this vampire was fast. The three of them ran through the streets of New York, invisible to humans, heading vaguely in the direction of the Empire State Building construction site.

As they approached the work site, the vampire turned the corner around the building, trying to evade his pursuers. Edward followed right behind him, but Jacob kept straight to head him off when he came around the building on the other side.

Unfortunately for the killer, the construction workers were breaking new ground that evening. Dynamite and explosive chemicals were set up in the area near the service street at the back of the unfinished building, and an explosion to clear the ground was set to happen in a few minutes. Edward, approaching the scene, could hear the explosion plan in the minds of the workers, who were retreating from the explosion site to avoid injury or death. "Perfect," he whispered.

As he and the killer rounded the corner and suddenly found themselves on the service street, Edward attacked. He put on a burst of speed and launched himself onto the killer's back. They struggled violently; the killer was putting up a brilliant fight. When Jacob caught up a few seconds later, he saw the explosion site and immediately deduced Edward's plan. With Jacob's help, Edward was able to do what alone he could not: they subdued the killer. Jacob held him tightly in his muscular body; he thrashed and writhed in Jacob's strong arms but couldn't escape. All business, Edward bit down on the vampire's hard, cold neck with his unbreakable teeth, tearing into his throat and ripping his head from his body. Jacob released him and began systematically, coldly dismembering the killer--destroying him. When the vampire was completely torn to shreds, Edward and Jacob raced to pick up the pieces of the body before any humans noticed.

Then, with the setting sun in the background, Jacob threw the marble shreds of vampire into the blast area mere seconds before the explosion detonated. Edward and Jake watched from a distance as the fire appeared, engulfing the area and with it what was once the vampire's body. Night fell and still they watched, making sure the vampire was truly annihilated. When the fire burnt out and no signs came that he had survived, they finally turned away.

Their success at having disposed of the killer was only half-hearted. Jacob knew what was coming next.

"Well… we did it."

"He's gone," Jacob said with a sigh. And you will be too, soon.

"Let's just go home," Edward said, looking depressed. He felt like all he wanted was to lie down next to Jacob on the floor of their apartment and whisper into the darkness.

&&&

And so that was what they did. Lights off and window shades drawn, Edward and Jacob lay down together on the living room floor, arms, legs, torsos touching. Edward was painfully aware of exactly how close the two of them were. It was time to discuss their feelings; Edward was ready--scared out of his mind still, but ready.

"I think I'm in love with you," he whispered, barely audibly, into the dark. When Jacob didn't react for a few moments, he repeated it, a little louder. Jacob still said nothing. Edward's stomach seized up in fear--was this rejection? He turned over onto his side to look at Jacob's face. His eyes were closed, and there was a slight smile on his face; he looked happy and relaxed.

"I'm just savoring this moment, Edward. Don't get concerned," Jacob told him, eyes still closed. "In a little while you'll be gone from me, and all I'll have left of you is remembering the time you said you loved me."

"Oh, you'll have more than that," Edward growled.

Slipping his eyes closed, he leaned forward ever so slightly, inch by inch, until his face was above Jacob's. Gathering his courage, he placed his lips on Jacob's own and pressed down tentatively, experimentally moving his mouth, searching for the perfect position. Jacob's mouth felt like fire under his own, though in reality both were cold as marble. There was electricity flowing between the two of them. As they kissed, Edward cautiously lay his body down on top of Jacob's. Jacob moaned audibly, sending vibrations through his mouth and chest. Edward shuddered in response to the sensation, throwing his head back and breathing heavily, breaking the kiss. Then he sat up and swallowed, staring directly into Jacob's eyes, asking permission to continue. Jacob stared steadily back.

"This is… what you want?"

"You know it's what I want."

Edward ripped Jake's shirt from his body, exposing his marbled, muscled skin. He ran his hands over Jake's chest and stomach, stopping to rub his thumbs over Jake's nipples. Jake sighed in contentment. He could stay like this for eternity, with Edward touching him, loving him. With his eyes closed, he reached forward to lift Edward's shirt over his head. Both men were naked to the waist now, and they pressed their bodies together, feeling, sensing.

"We fit so perfectly," Jacob mumbled, voice heated with desire.

They kissed violently, lips smashed, tongues dueling. Jacob kissed his way down Edward's neck, whispering as he went. "Please…don't…leave…me…"

He came to the base of Edward's neck and ran his tongue in small circles. Edward moaned and arched his back.

"I won't," he promised.
